Masaka, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Catholic Bishop of Masaka Diocese, Severus Jjumba has called for fairness in the arbitration of disputes by government agencies to enable communities to live peacefully.
In his Easter message delivered from the Episcopal home at Kitovu, in Nyendo-Mukungwe division, Masaka city, Bishop Jjumba expressed concern about acts of unfairness especially exerted onto the less privileged persons, which deprive them of their inherent rights.
He called upon the judiciary to strongly stand for fairness during the adjudication of land disputes that are presented before the courts of law, as one of the ways to promote social justice.
Bishop Jjumba also asked the Christian community to desist from habits of environmental destruction as well as to courageously support efforts geared towards reinforcing the Basic Christian communities, a structure the diocese adopted to strengthen faith.
He indicates that besides providing spiritual support and strengthening family institutions, the Basic Christian Communities, have also been given the responsibility of promoting hygiene, food security, environmental conservation, and responsible garbage management right from homesteads.
Meanwhile, West Buganda Anglican Bishop Henry Katumba Tamale expressed concern about the many suspects who serve longer remand sentences in the various prison facilities before they are fully tried.
Bishop Katumba who led prayers in Mukungwe prison in Nyendo- Mukungwe division, challenged the Police’s crime investigations officers to always focus on gathering the required evidence, before committing the suspects for trial, such that justice can expeditiously be delivered.
