Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The death toll of the Mbale city flood victims has increased to 20 people. Ten more bodies have been recovered this morning from River Nabuyonga in Mbale City Industrial Division.
The 10 were traveling in a super custom, which plunged into the river following the heavy rains that pounded the town on Saturday evening. This brings to 20, the number of bodies recovered following the Saturday night disaster.
Police and residents have teamed up to retrieve the super custom from the river. The efforts have taken longer due to the lack of equipment. Currently, the police and residents are using ropes to pull the vehicle from the river.
Unconfirmed reports show that the deceased were heading to Kabwangasi sub-county in Butebo district from Kampala for an introduction ceremony.
Musa Mutiwa, one of those who helped to retrieve the bodies, said that they had managed to pull out 8 bodies.
The Mbale City Resident Commissioner, Ahamda Washaki on Sunday told the Prime Minister there are fears that many more people could have died from the floods and are their bodies still in the water. He said that there is a need to deploy the Police Marine Unit to search for the missing bodies.

Universities teaching disaster preparedness must be shedding tears. Disaster management is ably taught at our universities yet we seem to have learned nothing. right from LC1 to City authorities not to mention the central govt share blame as they seem to be more interested in disaster and not its non occurrence. How can you explain he fact that people continue destroying river banks and it is business as usual? How can famine hit areas leading to deaths as if there were no early warning signs? How can the Bagisu and i hope not Kasese next time die from what the State and local governments could have stopped? How do you put an industrial park in wetland without guidance from NEMA or NEMA should face trial? Etc Etc Etc
Many people in ug don’t now God and don’t respect His Name but i now He loves us to mach.
