Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Unity Platform-NUP leaders in Mbale on Friday tasked their leader Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine, on the face of supporters who are still in detention.
Abdullah Magambo, a Councilor representing Northern City Division in Mbale City said that there are over 20 NUP supporters in Mbale who were arrested during the campaigns and that they have never received legal representation.
He said that NUP leadership in Kampala has not done enough to ensure that their members get justice.
Yasin Madoi, the NUP Chairperson for Mbale City said that there is no clear communication between the regional leaders and the National leadership.
Kyagulanyi was in Mbale meeting leaders in the Bugisu sub-region.
Kyagulanyi while responding to the concerns of the party leaders said that just like in other parts of the country, he is aware many people in Mbale and Eastern Uganda were arrested. Kyagulanyi said that the party leadership will ensure that the detained members are released.
Earlier in the day Kyagulanyi was blocked from appearing on BCU FM for a talk show.
Richard Werishe, the BCU FM Programs Manager, said they got directives from Mbale Resident City Commissioner, Ahamada Washaki not to host the former presidential candidate.
Police later had to use tear gas to disperse supporters of Kyagulanyi who were following him out of Mbale City.
In Teso, the Police struggled to control crowds from accessing Kyagulanyi who was on his way to Lira City. The Police Command in Soroti dispatched personnel to track Kyagulanyi entourage that was from Mbale, all the way through Bukedea, Kumi and Soroti City.
In Kumi town, business came to a standstill when Kyagulanyi’s convoy stopped around Ongino Road Junction to buy oranges, water and chicken. The Police, who were taken by surprise, quickly mobilized to disperse crowds that started converging at the junction.
George Okoit, the NUP Coordinator in Soroti says that Kyagulanyi was not allowed to make any stopovers along the way after the police escorted them out of the busy towns.
Oscar Greg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman says that Kyagulanyi had no activities in Soroti.
