Mob lynches man for slaughtering his wife

Lira, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | An angry mob in Lira has killed a man for butchering his wife. The mob hunted 53-year-old Denis Alal and killed him for slaughtering his estranged wife, Christine Akello on Monday evening.

It all started after Alal while at Anai Ober Cell, Lira City West division trailed Akello who was on her way to a small saving group using a boda boda, intercepted and cut her thigh and neck using a machete killing her instantly. He took off from the scene but some residents who had witnessed the incident intercepted him and cut him to death using the same machete.

Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Region Spokesperson who described the incident as barbaric, says that they have since recovered the exhibits, adding that inquiries are ongoing although no suspect has been arrested.

“This is quite a barbaric act which we as police condemns in the strongest term. We appeal to members of the public to learn to share their grievances than taking the law into their hands,” he said.

The deceased’s bodies are at Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post mortem. Police have opened inquiries at Lira Central Police Station under CRB 998/202. In a similar development, Police in Alebtong district are investigating circumstances under which an angry mob lynched two suspected thieves in Aloi sub-county.

The deceased are Jack Okeng, a 24- year old resident of Acandyang village and Andrew Ameny, a 28 year-old boda boda rider and resident of Imaki Oboro village, Awiepek parish in Alebtong district. The duo was accused of stealing a sheep from the home of Coda Lamec. Coda who was alerted by the bleating of his goats and sheep checked his kraal and found one sheep missing.

He mobilized community members who then mounted roadblocks and intercepted the suspects and beat them to death. Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident, saying the police were later informed and the crime scene documented without any arrest. “We responded and recovered the sheep, damaged motorcycle and bicycle from the scene of crime and that is all for now. More updates will follow,” he said.
