Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has called upon Uganda Girl Guides Association to design strategies to attract more girls to join the movement.

“I am a bit disappointed that we have 200,000 girl guides from a population of close to 40 million people. We have to be more visible and also interest young girls to join,” said Kadaga who was opening the Kusafiri Leadership Programme organized by Uganda Girl Guides Association at J&M Airport Hotel, on Thursday, 6 December 2018.

“A lot of the things I do are because of being brought up first as a Brownie then as a Girl Guide,” said Kadaga, who applauded parents who allow their girls to join Girl Guiding.

Brownies are girl scouts aged seven to 10 empowered to improve their community, explore their surroundings and develop themselves.

The Kusafiri leadership programme is intended “to prepare facilitators for the 2019 Juliette Low Seminar, an international leadership development programme and a cultural programme to explore the heritage and diversity of Uganda”. The programme runs until 12 December 2018.

The Speaker re-affirmed Uganda’s commitment to host the World Association of Girl Guides Conference in 2020.

Uganda Girl Guides Association in the last world conference held in New Delhi, India, won the bid to host the next world conference in 2020. Over 1,000 delegates are expected from all over the world.

The Uganda Girl Guides Association is a non-governmental organization founded in 1914 that is dedicated to the growth and development of girls and women. It is also a member of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
