Mohammed Nsereko, the Kampala Central MP has said he does not intend to go to the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi because the retreat is nothing but a ‘consolidation and indoctrination’ scheme.
The ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), is organizing its annual retreat for its members and this year’s 10-day event is intended to review the performance of the implementation of the major sectors in the NRM manifesto 2011-2016.
According to the Chairperson of the NRM Caucus, David Bahati, the retreat which begins on Jan. 11 will run under the theme, ‘Appreciating the budgeting process for better service delivery,’ and is also intended to help members of the NRM Parliamentary caucus appreciate the budgeting process while discussing and adopting the NRM parliamentary caucus rules.
While addressing the press at Parliament on Jan.9, Bahati added that the retreat will enable NRM Caucus members appreciate the need for industrialization and job creation as a springboard for Uganda’s economic development.
However, MP Nsereko said he saw no point in attending the retreat because the retreats have never achieved anything ever since they were initiated.
“What have they achieved since they started going to Kyankwanzi?” he asked. Nsereko said he was not discouraging any MP from going to Kyankwanzi, adding that his was his personal decision.
Nsereko is one of the independent-minded MPs who officially belong to the NRM party but have been a constant pain to the party’s top leadership, often times choosing not to follow the party line.
According to some sources, the party is considering dismissing some of its party members that have failed to adhere to party rules. Not surprisingly, the list includes the youthful Mohammed Nsereko who came into the political limelight in 2011.
