Mukono police arrest criminal gang terrorizing University students

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga

Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Crime Intelligence in collaboration with Mukono police have arrested three suspects in connection with attacks on students living in apartments mostly in the areas of Mukono district. The suspects are Allan Kitanda Lubugu, the suspected ringleader of the gang, Anatoli Kakeeto, and Betty Nantongo.

Kakeeto and Nantongo are believed to have been facilitating the attacks on students by providing the gangs with rudimentary weapons and buying items majorly electronic gadgets robbed from the victims.

The operation stemmed from several complaints raised by students living and studying in institutions along Jinja highway especially those from Uganda Christian University (UCU) indicating that gangs would trail them from their campuses up to their areas of residence.

Kitanda 23, was severally described by the victims leading to his manhunt as well as his accomplices at the start of last week. According to the crime intelligence team, he was picked up from his hideout in Kauga village, Mukono municipality.

Security has since established that Kitanda who is also implicated by female students of raping them during the evening hours or after breaking into their apartments in the wee hours of the night, is the son of the Kauga village defense secretary.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga confirmed Kitanda’s arrest, saying that the hunt for his accomplices identified as Stephen Semakula and Abdu Nsubuga is ongoing. Enanga says that they have since learned that there is a boda boda rider who would quickly transports the stolen items to the shops of Kakeeto and Nantongo in Mukono town for sale.

Gift Cathy Wafula, one of the victims of Kitanda’s gang says she was trailed from campus up to her home. Wafula said she was shocked at 7pm when three men stormed her house with pangas and robbed her wallet, Samsung phone, and laptop.

Security has since recovered numerous items that were stolen from students in Kakeeto and Nantongo’s shop. These include flat TV screens, flat irons, phones, and laptops.
