Mukula upbeat on NRM victory in Teso

NRM Vice Chairperson in charge of Eastern Uganda, Capt. Mike Mukula

Soroti, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement- NRM Vice Chairperson in charge of Eastern Uganda, Capt. Mike Mukula is optimistic that the National Resistance Movement-NRM party will defeat the Forum for Democratic Change- FDC in Teso in Thursday’s polls.

While addressing the media at his residence in Senior Quarters, Soroti City, Mukula said that NRM has regained ground and is likely to sweep all the elective positions including parliamentary seats.

According to Mukula, since 2006, FDC has been losing support to NRM. In 2006, FDC got eleven out of 17 slots for MPs and three District Chairpersons out of five in Teso Sub Region. In 2011 elections, FDC MPs were reduced to eight out of 21 seats and the number further reduced to only three in the 2016 elections.

Although FDC has fielded candidates in almost all the constituencies in the region, all the three FDC MPs in the tenth parliament are now contesting to retain their seats as independent candidates. This, according to Mukula is a good sign for his party to defeat FDC, that has been Uganda’s main opposition party from Teso this year.

But Jovans Peter Odikor, the FDC Acting Secretary-General in Soroti says Mukula’s comments are a joke of the year. He notes that FDC has become stronger than before, adding that NRM and Mukula will be shocked by the outcome of Thursday’s polls.

Mukula has been campaigning in the region for the last one month to popularize NRM candidates especially in the new Gweri County and Soroti County which has been dominated by FDC and recently won by an independent candidate, Kenneth Esiangu Eitunganane.

In 2006, Mukula described FDC candidates as rats who couldn’t defeat him. However, he lost to little known Jimmy Ekemu, the FDC candidate for Soroti Municipality.
