Muntu dully nominated to contest for 2021 elections

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The ANT party president Mugisha Muntu has been dully cleared by the Electoral Commission to contest for presidency in the 2021 general elections.

“Everything appears to be in order and…for that matter, I Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi being the returning officer, declares that Mugisha Muntu Gregg is a duly nominated candidate in respect of the presidential election 2021…” Byabakama said.

Like the candidates nominated before him, Muntu is to appoint an official agent who will coordinate his campaign and media program with the Electoral Commission. He is also to submit his campaign schedule to the Commission and also sign a Memorandum of Understanding committing to follow the Electoral program and also adhering to the guidelines geared towards stopping the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Speaking to the media after his nomination, Muntu called upon the Electoral Commission to organize an election that is acceptable to all those who are going to take part in it. “Don’t fear, Do what is necessary, conduct a free, fair and transparent process, the country is behind you. It’s your choice, tough but you have to make it,” Muntu said.

He added that he believes that the country has today started a new chapter. “I believe that this day, that a new era is starting. Many may not be able to recognize that but with the passage of time, it will become self-evident. It has been a long journey, we have gone through a lot of battles but today is a day of victory. This is the beginning of victory in this country,” Muntu said.

He added that other than working on the prosperity of the country, he will also work his head off if elected, to restore the dignity of all Ugandans. “We intend to create an environment where people will prosper and also have dignity and be equal before the law,” he added.

For three times, Muntu contested against Dr Kizza Besigye to be the presidential flag bearer of the Forum for Democratic Change. However, in 2017 when he lost the party presidency to the current president Patrick Amuriat Oboi, he broke ranks and formed his own party, the Alliance for National Transformation.

At Kyambogo, Muntu was escorted by his wife Julia and party officials that include Alice Alaso, Wilberforce Sseryazi, Winnie Kiiza, Ssewava Sserubiri, Martin Wandera, Edith Ssempala and Paul Mwiru, among others.
