President Yoweri Museveni is in Nairobi, Kenya on a 2-day visit during which he will attend the second retreat of the East African Community Heads of State on infrastructure development and financing.
He will also attend the 14th Summit of the Heads of State of the East African Community member countries of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.
President Museveni was received on arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport this morning by the Kenya Justice Minister, Mr. Eugene Wamalwa and Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nairobi, Mrs. Angelina Wapakhabulo. The arrival ceremony at the Airport included the inspection of a guard of honour mounted by the Kenya Air Force.
Recently, the East African Community Secretary General, Ambassador Richard Sezibera, was in Luxembourg City where he met with officials of the European Investment Bank (EIB) on a partnership for financing regional infrastructure projects. Put together, the projects were estimated to cost a total of 175 million Euros.
According to Ambassador Sezibera, building the energy interconnectors project for operationalization of the regional power pool, the Kenya – South Sudan road link, the Burundi control tower to make air travel in that country safer and the Lake Victoria Safety and Navigation project, are the major areas that the regional body has been looking at.
The regional power pool alone was estimated to consume 70 million Euros, the air control tower programme in Burundi 20 million Euros while the Kenya – South Sudan road link and the Lake Victoria Safety and Navigation project would require 60 million and 25 million Euros respectively.
