Isingiro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | President Yoweri Museveni has directed squatters on part of the land belonging to Nakivale refugee settlement earmarked to host an industrial park in Insigiro district to vacate.
He issued the directive in his address on local radio stations and televisions in western Uganda from his rural home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura district.
Museveni noted that the country would never develop if its people continue earning through imported goods as opposed to manufacturing them locally.
He hailed the leadership of Isingiro district for earmarking the land for the industrial park.
He said that those sitting on the land must vacate. He advised them to harvest their crops and utilize the remaining land.
Museveni said that he directed during a cabinet meeting for the subdivision of the refugee settlement land in Nakivale in Isingiro and Kyaka in Tooro because of the failure by the districts to provide land for industrial parks.
The Isingiro district LC V Chairperson, Alone Tuhairwe Turahi, said that they earmarked 30 acres of land for the industrial park off the Nakivale refugee settlement land in Bukanga county.
He says that they presented their decision to the President during their interaction in September last year and requested factories that will add value to their bananas.
Isingiro district is one of the leading banana producers in the Ankole region with about 500,000 bunches supplied to the market every day.
