MP Betty Nambooze fights alcohol consumption
President Yoweri Museveni’s call to regulate alcohol consumption, mirrors a campaign last year by Mukono Municipality legislator Betty Nambooze, which was thrown out of parliament.
Her Alcoholic Drinks Control Bill 2016 failed to get the support it required in parliament, and she was asked to seek the consent of and harmonize her proposals with the Minister of Health to improve the Alcohol Policy.

MPs claimed the bill would contravene the Constitution. Speaker Jacob Oulanya asked government if the proposed private members bill has a financial damage to the country’s economy.
Nambooze had argued that the country must urgently update its outdated legislation on alcohol. She told parliament that statistics indicated that each Ugandan consumes 24 litres of alcohol yearly.
