Nabilatuk, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Authorities in Nabilatuk district have commenced the rehabilitation works on Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat Road approximately 32.8 km.
The construction works will cost Shs 400 million shillings for the grading of the road, installation of culverts, repairing of the drifts, installing of drainage channels and spot graveling on selected areas.
Elijah Liko, the Nabilatuk District Engineer said that the works have commenced and are expected to be complete in a period of three months. Liko said that they will only do spot gravel on the major areas selected because the district does not have enough resources for the full maintenance.
Liko noted that the road broken box culverts were destroyed by the marble trucks because of the heavy load. He appealed to the district authorities to regulate the heavy truck movements in the road to avoid further destruction after repairs.
Emmy Ejuku Olaboro, the Chief Administrative Officer for Nabilatuk district said that they received one billion shillings from the government of Uganda allocated for Road Works.
Olaboro explained that during the budgeting, they resolved to allocate 400 million shillings for Nabilatuk-Amuda-Lorengedwat road while 600 million was allocated for road works on Nabilatuk-Lorengecora Road.
Olaboro observed that the road has been a great inconvenience to the road users especially the pregnant mothers who are referred to the regional hospital in Moroto district. He urged the road users and the surrounding community to cooperate with the contractor and own the project.
Olaboro said that some community members can start selling food stuff to the casual laborers working on the road. He cautioned the community members to desist from rolling ox-ploughs on the road to avoid potholes and ponds.
Paul Lokol, the LC5 chairperson of Nabilatuk district urged the community to embrace development, especially roads.
He appealed to the community to desist from asking for compensation when Community Access Roads pass on their land. Lokol emphasized the need to monitor the progress of works and ensure that the road is fixed within stipulated time.
Kyeyune Ssenyonjo, the Nabilatuk Resident District Commissioner urged the community to be vigilant and report any theft of fuel from the road equipment.
He expressed optimism on improvement of security along Amuda Road once the road is worked on.
‘’A lot of road ambushes have been happening along the Amuda to Lorengedwat because the criminals used the poor state of the road to stop attacking people,” said Ssenyonjo.
He revealed that the security situation is calm following the deployment of the forces along the hotspot areas on the roads.
