Fort Portal, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) has commenced training of teachers on the revised Advanced Level (A-Level) curriculum at Canon Apollo Core Primary Teachers’ College in Fort Portal City.

The training, which will last seven days, is part of a nationwide effort to support teachers in implementing the updated curriculum that was rolled out in February 2025.

Key changes in the revised curriculum include the replacement of general objectives with specific learning outcomes, a focus on the acquisition of competencies, and the introduction of generic skills.

Teaching and learning methods will also become more interactive to promote deeper understanding and engagement among learners.

Gilbert Siima, Manager of the Secondary Department at NCDC, said the master trainers will play a crucial role in ensuring effective interpretation and implementation of the curriculum in schools nationwide.

“The role of the Master Trainers is to build the capacity of teachers by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge to deliver the new curriculum,” Siima stated.

Siima said that under the revised curriculum, the subject combinations and names remain unchanged, but they have been aligned with the O-Level curriculum to ensure continuity and coherence in the education system.

Ayub Kalema Golooba, a Geography teacher who is undergoing training, highlighted the integration of Artificial Intelligence and Information and Communication Technology as a major shift in the new curriculum.

He explained that these will simplify the teaching and learning process for students of all categories.

Susan Amoding, a biology teacher, welcomed the new approach, saying the new curriculum is a progressive move that will transform teaching and allow learners to fully engage in the learning process.

Upon completion of the training, the trainers will be deployed across the country to guide and mentor other A-Level teachers.
