New justice law and order sector centre excites Rubirizi residents

Rubirizi District, which was curved from Greater Bushenyi in 2010 has been dependent on judicial services from the parent district, which is 50 kilometers away. It now hopes to improves access to judicial services, thanks to the commissioning of the new centre by Chief Justice, Bart Katureebe on Tuesday.

Rubirizi, Uganda  | THE INDEPENDENT |  The newly opened Justice, Law and Order Centre in Rubirizi district, has excited residents.  The 1.6 billion Shillings facility houses the Magistrate’s court, the Offices of the Director of Public Prosecution and police station.

Rubirizi District, which was curved from Greater Bushenyi in 2010 has been dependent on judicial services from the parent district, which is 50 kilometers away. It now hopes to improves access to judicial services, thanks to the commissioning of the new centre by Chief Justice, Bart Katureebe on Tuesday. 

Gregory Bashaija, a resident of Katerera in Rubirizi district, says accessing judicial services has been costly for majority of residents Transport to Bushenyi is  40,000 Shillings.

Frank Kyakamara Karugaba, a resident of Kirugu, says the new center is a huge sigh of relief because they have been renting space for police and magistrate’s court to access Justice.

In his speech, the Chief Justice, Bart Katureebe noted that a study carried out by The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law showed that only 5 per cent of rural Ugandans can access Justice, noting the huge gap in the Justice sector.

Katureebe warned politicians against interfering in judicial services and police duties.

The Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu who represented the president, said there is need to take judicial services nearer to the people if the country is be transformed.
