Buganda Road Court Magistrate Joan Aciro on Tuesday declined to release on bail five youths from the Uganda Young Democrats who are facing charges of inciting violence and assaulting a police officer.
Moses Bigirwa, Juma Kayondo, Haruna Nsibuka, Hakim Kizza and Allan Kitonsa were arrested by police on Wednesday last week at the main gate of parliament allegedly making statements that were calculated to incite violence from the public.
The youth, who are in a wing of the Democratic Party, made the statements as they delivered a petition demanding parliament shelves a bill was aimed at extending the retirement age of judicial officers and Electoral Commission commissioners.
Bigirwa is also charged separately with assaulting D/ASP Benson Obworoh who was in execution of his duties on September 14, 2016.
Magistrate Aciro ruled that the accused, who were remanded on Friday, had not proved to court how their welfare or that of their families will be endangered if they remain in Luzira prison. She added that “society must be protected from lawlessness of the youths” and instead fixed the case for hearing on October 4, 2016.
There was drama in court as the accused’ colleagues from DP hurled insults at prosecutors and police after court ruled on no bail.
