NRM campaigns for Kisoro Woman MP by-election halted

Kisoro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party’s joint campaigns of candidates contesting for the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament seat have been halted.

13 candidates are contesting to hold the party flag. They include; Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, Sylvia Dushime Agaba, Winfred Faith Igiraneze, Jemimah Irankunda, Rose Kabagyeni, Blessed Kitentere, Irene Mahirwe, Hellen Mbonye, Fancy Bredah Nirere, and Louise Niyikiza.

The campaigns started on Tuesday this week.  However, a reliable source has revealed to our reporter that the campaigns were halted on Friday after the NRM Party Chairman President Yoweri Museveni summoned all the candidates for a meeting in Kampala.

A source revealed that Museveni is scheduled to meet the candidates on Sunday.

When contacted, Ramathan Ndikuyeze, Kisoro district NRM party vice chairperson confirmed that the campaigns have been halted after the candidates were invited to Kampala by one of the top party officials.

Ndikuyeze declined to reveal the identity of the official.  He says that halting the campaigns should not create anxiety because they will resume after the meeting.

The NRM party has set October 25, as the polling date for the flag bearer while the Electoral Commission has fixed November 14, as the polling day.

The seat fell vacant after the death of Nyirabashitsi who was also the State Minister for State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs on September 7, 2024. She died after suffering a heart attack.
