NRM MP conspires to divert House agenda

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | With the siege of offices of the National Unity Platfrom (NUP), the brutal arrest of opposition MPs and continued illegal detention of supporters of NUP, a little known MP called Juliet Kinyamatama conspired to divert the House agenda as parliament discussed the deteriorating human rights situation in the country.

Days ago, Butambala MP Muwanga Kivumbi raised on the floor of parliament the deplorable brutality and intolerance by the state of opposition actors. As a result, opposition MPs staged a walk out.

Sensing that the House was getting overwhelmed by the demand for release of those jailed illegally and calls to end the siege of NUP offices, Kinyamatama diverted the House by alleging an altercation by Francis Zaake, the Mityana Municipality MP. Some MPs said the altercation happened outside parliament and therefore should not be debated inside parliament.

But in the end, Kinyamatama had got what she wanted: a diversion from the worsening state of affairs in the country. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa adjourned the House after a two hour stand-off.
