Arua, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Resistance Movement- NRM party tribunal has ordered for fresh primaries in three wards of Arua Central division. The wards are Ojulua, Baruku and Ozua Cell A and B.
This follows a petition filed by Robert Ejiku one of the contestants of Arua Central Division NRM parliamentary primaries against Jackson Atima who was declared the winner. Other contestants were Jackson Atima, Robert Ejiku, Godfrey Obiga and Dr Mbarack Khalifan.
According to the provisional results declared by Arua NRM Returning Officer, Atima obtained 4,093 votes while Ejiku got 3,956 votes. However, Ejiku petitioned the NRM secretariat arguing that due to chaos at the polling stations of Ojulua and Ozua Cells, many of his voters were chased away, which robbed him of victory.
Last week, the tribunal ruled that Atima was the right winner. However on Tuesday, Hamza Ali the NRM District Registrar says that he received a telephone call from the NRM secretariat directing him to conduct fresh elections today.
Following the announcement, security in Arua City has been heightened in the three wards to avoid clashes between supporters of Ejiku and Atima.
On Tuesday, Ejiku and Atima’s campaign managers were seen moving door to door in the three cells to canvass for votes.
