Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Thembo Gideon Mujungu has been elected the Busongora South Constituency Member of Parliament.
Mujungu, the National Resistance Movement-NRM candidate polled 12,088 votes to defeat his closest rival Jackson Mbaju of the National Unity Platform who had 6,866 votes. The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC candidate Aloysius Kighema Baguma came third polling 5,564 votes, while Benadet Businge of the Democratic Party-DP polled 84 votes only.
The independent candidate David Mulindwa Isimwa got 2,093 votes and Doreen Izaagire polled only 32 votes. Mujungu was declared the winner by the Kasese District Returning Officer, Takih Ismail Takih Atwijukire last night.
However, members of the opposition are not happy saying the exercise was largely militarized. The former leader of opposition Winnie Kiiza, who was backing Mbaju says soldiers were largely involved in controlling the exercise with some of them voting even when they were not in the registers.
She also decried police’s action to arrest Kighema when the candidate stormed the Katunguru Primary School polling station after his agents notified him about some irregularities. The candidate was later in the afternoon released by police.
Ernest Kasoke, the Chief Mobilizer for Mbaju was also reportedly arrested by armed men for unknown reasons. Saulo Maate, the Kasese district FDC chairperson says they will prepare to challenge the outcome.
The seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal nullified the election of NRM’s Mujungu last month on grounds that the elections were marred by gross irregularities.
Three Justices of Appeal led by Fredrick Egonda Ntende overturned the decision of the High Court in Fort Portal and concurred with Thembo’s rival Mbaju that there were irregularities at Katunguru Primary school, Katunguru Market, and Busunga Primary school polling stations in Kasese District.

There is a lot opposition needs to do in the grassroot in order for them to gain support and trust from the locals. Don’t just visit the locals during vote handling , do much of regularly visits to some of this villages and interact with the locals listen to them and offer them necessary support .do regularly mobilization and sensitisation of masses on current issues touching them and offer practical solutions. That is how ruto managed to win support from locals in Kenya. During covid time he moved a round the country supporting the marginalized population while rails and Uhuru were busy on bbi project which wasn’t necessary . we should ideas from such examples. Its what u do in action that will sell u but not the good words alone u are telling the masses.
