Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Unity Platform-NUP party has endorsed the Butambala County MP, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi as their candidate for the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus chairperson race. The caucus brings together all legislators from the Central region regardless of their political affiliation.
MPs use the caucus to lobby programs and projects for the benefit of the region and liaise with the Kabaka’s government in Bulange-Mengo to support the social and economic programs of the monarch. On Tuesday, four legislators, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi from Butambala County, David Kalwanga of Busujju County, Betty Nambooze of Mukono Municipality and their Lubaga South counterpart Aloysius Mukasa expressed interest in chairing the Buganda Parliamentary Caucus in a closed meeting.
This comes ahead of elections which will include candidates from other political parties. After hours of deliberations, NUP which boasts of 57 members, endorsed Muwanga Kivumbi as their candidate for Buganda Parliamentary Caucus Chairperson’s race. Also endorsed is David Kalwanga for the position of caucus treasurer, Ntenjeru South MP (Independent) Patrick Nsanja Secretary, Mityana Woman MP, Joyce Bagala Public Relations Officer and Bukomansimbi North MP, Dr. Christine Ndiwalana as External Affairs Secretary.
However, the endorsement of Muwanga Kivumbi did not go down well with Nambooze who felt she was the right candidate for the position of Buganda Caucus Chairperson. She stormed out of the meeting shortly after Kivumbi’s endorsement. Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson says that the party had reserved five out of the 10 positions.
Addressing journalists shortly after his endorsement, Muwanga Kivumbi promised to use the platform to push for the matters affecting the people of Buganda once elected. He noted that the Buganda parliamentary caucus should be able to shape the politics, economic and social policies of Uganda.
Kivumbi revealed that unemployment, land grabbing and evictions would form some of their key areas of focus.
