Mukono, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The National Unity Platform-NUP leaders in greater Mukono have denounced a petition challenging the victory of Democratic Party-DP’s parliamentary candidate in the Mukono South County race.
On Tuesday, Wilson Male, who lost the seat on the NUP ticket petitioned the High Court challenging the victory of Fred Kayondo.
However, leaders including newly elected councillors and Members of Parliament led by the greater Mukono district coordinator Betty Nambooze have unanimously agreed not to support the petition claiming that the applicant did not consult them.
According to Nambooze, the applicant individually organized the petition without involving them as leaders or the party lawyers at the secretariat.
“We shall support him on condition that he has gone through the rightful procedure set up by the party and fully guided by the secretariat lawyers. The beauty of going through the secretariat is that one also stands a chance of receiving funds to support the petition.”
The decision has come two days after the applicant decried inadequate funds and support for the petition from party members.
However, Male insists that the winner was illegally declared by the Electoral Commission and wants the court to nullify his victory before ordering for a by-election.
In the petition, Male also notes that Kayondo forged signatures of seconders before his nominations. He also indicates that the defendant bribed voters during the campaigning period.
