Mbarara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Nyamitanga Technical Institute in Mbarara City has asked the Minister of Education and Sports Janet Museveni to fulfill the pledge of shs 2 billion.
Mrs. Museveni in 2019 pledged to support the institute for the construction of a six-storied classroom block.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Rev. Deusdit Karemire the Chairman Board of Governors Nyamitanga Technical Institute says the number of students has increased to 803, which has caused a challenge of space due to inadequate infrastructure.
He said that they are still waiting for the money to assist them to construct part of the 6-storeyed building that will cost 4.5 Billion shillings and will accommodate 2,000 trainees.
Archbishop Mbarara Archdiocese Lambert Bainomugisha also asked the government to consider elevating the Technical Institute to a Technical College to enable it to train National Diplomas in Engineering Courses in addition to the National Certificate Courses, that the institute is offering.
He says the increasing enrollment is an indication that the institute is capable of producing competent trainees.
Gilvazio Bafaki the Principal of Nyamitanga Technical Institute said the institute also faces challenges of insufficient equipment, especially in ICT and staff.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Sports Ketty Lamaro said that they will follow up on the pledge by the Minister. She also asked the leadership to officially request for the elevation of the institute.
Lamaro flagged off 300 trainees sponsored by the Government under the Uganda Skills Development Program to begin their industrial training.
4671 graduates were awarded National Certificates in Vocation and Technical Courses like Carpentry and Joinery, Brick laying, and Concrete Practice among others.
