Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Opposition politicians laughed scornfully at the new appointments of members of the Electoral Commission. 2021 presidential candidate Bobi Wine recated to the news saying the mask had now been removed with the cadres joining the EC.
Four time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye has often castigated the electoral body as Museveni’s walking stick. Other analysts also joined saying the last leg of impartiality was kicked away with the appointments. President Museveni appointed the four new members to the Electoral Commission ahead of the 2026 polls.
They are MUK lecturer Sallie Simba Kayunga, former NRM MPs Anthony Okello, Robert Sebunya and EC head of administration Pamela Okudi.
Parliament will vet the new team and then after they serve a seven year term. Museveni re-appointed EC boss Justice Simon Byabakama, Hajati Aisha Lubega and Stephen Tashobya, a member. Critics scoffed at the appointment saying the appointees were NRM cadres who will do the bidding of the ruling government.
