Parliament approves Gen Wamala, new envoys

Gen Katumba Wamala in Somalia

Gen Katumba Wamala was vetted and approved by the Parliament Appointments Committee as State Minister for Works along with 11 new ambassadors. Although some members of the committee had reservations about Wamala being a serving UPDF soldier, the issue did not arise since a precedent had already been set with the approval of the late Gen Aronda Nyakairima as Minister for Internal Affairs. The former Chief of Defence Forces Wamala, said that Article 38 of the UPDF Act seconds any serving army officer to work in any appointed Cabinet or government position without resigning from the army. 11 out of the new 39 ambassadors were approved and these include Brig Ronnie Balya (South Sudan), Crispus Kiyonga (China), James Mbahimba (DRC) among others.
