Parliament tasks works minister Katumba Wamala on Nakaseke roads

Plenary sitting chaired by Deputy Speaker Anita Among.

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has directed the Minister of Works and Transport Gen. Katumba Wamala to take interest in the post state of roads in Nakaseke district.

This followed a matter of national interest raised by Nakaseke Woman MP, Sarah Najjuma on Wednesday in which she raised concern about the poor state of the road from Matugga to Kapeka.

She told parliament that due to ongoing rains, the road has become impassable with huge potholes and hence needs urgent attention.

Thomas Tayebwa, the Government Chief Whip pledged to forward the matter to the Ministry of Works and Transport and that a report regarding the state of road and government’s plan would be presented.

Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Environment Beatrice Anywar warned people living on shores of different lakes to evacuate as the rising water levels are expected to continue.

This followed a query raised by Joan Namutaawe, the Masaka Woman MP in which she asked government to account for the 45 billion Shillings that was passed through a supplementary budget in 2020 to assist communities that were affected by the rising water levels.

Namutaawe says that even though this money was passed, the people in the landing sites of Malembo, Namirembe, Lambu and Kakyanga have not been assisted. She appealed to the Office of the Prime Minister to intervene.

The Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga also weighed in saying that government needs to account for the funds that were appropriated by parliament. Tayebwa then asked parliament for time so that he follows up on the matter.

But Anywar asked the affected communities to move away from the lake shores as the rising water levels are likely to increase.
