Part of the busy Los Angeles International Airport was closed late Sunday due to unconfirmed reports of gunfire, airport officials said on Twitter.
“Upper/Departures & Lower/Arrivals levels of Central Terminal Area (CTA) closed. Pls check w/ airlines if heading to LAX,” airport authorities wrote, adding that they were “working to confirm reports” of the shooting.
Airport police searched the site after the reports, and urged passengers to “remain calm” in a Twitter message.
“All precautions being taken to ensure safety of public,” airport police wrote.
The Los Angeles airport, known as LAX, is the seventh busiest airport worldwide in terms of traffic. Los Angeles itself is the second most populous city in the United States.
