Kampala, Uganda | Xinhua | Thousands of Ugandans took part in a mega run on Sunday organized by the Buganda Kingdom and Airtel to raise funds for the fight against HIV and AIDS in the East African country.

Dubbed the Kabaka Birthday Run 2024, the annual event was held under the theme “Men are stars in the fight against HIV/AIDS to save the girl child” and also to celebrate the 69th birthday of King Ronald Muwenda Mutebi of Buganda, the biggest monarchy in Uganda.

Nnaalinya Lubuga Agnes Nnabaloga, a Buganda Kingdom official who represented the monarch, said at the opening ceremony that the cultural leader had urged Ugandans to protect themselves from the killer virus.

“The king is happy that thousands have joined this critical fight against HIV and AIDS,” Nnabaloga said. “If you already have the virus, please seek treatment and continue to take care of yourself.”

This year marks the second year in three that the race is dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS. Buganda Kingdom officials estimated that at least 110,000 people participated in the morning run.

Emmanuel Ainebyoona, the spokesperson for the Ugandan Ministry of Health, appreciated the monarchy for organizing such a massive event.

“This annual race really strengthens our efforts to end HIV and AIDS by 2030, and we appreciate the support of the Buganda Kingdom,” he said. “The HIV prevalence rate among adults aged 15-49 years remains high at 5.5 percent, with 7.1 percent among women and 3.8 percent among men.”

Uganda’s five kingdoms have a rich history dating back hundreds of years and continue to play a significant role in the lives of its people today. The largest among them is the Kingdom of Buganda, which traces its origins to the 13th century. ■
