Plans for World Cup trophy tour in Uganda revealed

Kampala, Uganda | JULIUS BUSINGE | The detailed schedule of the FIFA World Cup trophy tour in Uganda has been revealed, indicating it will be in the country for two days and will be on display at Lugogo stadium.

The tour is sponsored by Coca-Cola, one of the World’s largest beverage companies. Coca-Cola Uganda top officials told reporters in Kampala on Jan.29, that the tour serves as one avenue of cementing their relationship with their customers and the soccer fans.

The trophy, which will be received by Uganda Government Officials or the President on March 5, will be available for the rest of Ugandans to view inside Lugogo Cricket Oval in Kampala on March 6.

For one to access the ground, they will only be required to buy a bottle of soda made by Coca-Cola.

This will be the second time the precious trophy will be coming to Uganda since 2009.

“We are proud to welcome the FIFA World Cup Trophy to Uganda for the second time,” said Miriam Limo, the company’s senior brand manager for Uganda.

Limo said that Uganda was chosen amongst 10 countries in Africa to host the trophy through competitive bidding that focused on security, capacity to host among other factors.

She said that the love that Ugandans have for sports especially football is the other reason why they went into this trade.

Nicholas Muramagi, the General Secretary at the National Council of Sports (NCS) said that the tour would enhance Uganda’s sports tourism, and also stimulate interest for sports activities amongst Ugandans.

“Uganda will be showcased as a destination for soccer,” Muramagi said.

The trophy will visit only 10 countries in Africa. World over, it will traverse 50 countries across six continents [and 126, 000 kilometers] in the nine months leading up to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

In a press statement, circulated by Coca-Cola Company, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino said that the trophy serves as a unifying force worldwide.

“In the world of sports, no symbol stands stronger than the FIFA World Cup Trophy,” Infantino said.

  1. over 100years’ uganda’ dream. for it is good for it to move around up to uganda.this puts much more desire and love in players and all stakeholders to compete for it.
