Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Forum for Democratic Change-FDC party has called for an emergency National Executive Committee-NEC meeting to discuss the police brutality targeting their party members, students and journalists.
The party Spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda told journalists yesterday at their party headquarters in Kampala that the 86 member committee headed by the party President, Patrick Amuriat Oboi will convene at the party headquarters on Friday this week.
The meeting comes days after police blocked a seminar organised by FDC at Namboole stadium on November 4th, 2019. Police accused the organisers of ignoring its guidance to conduct the seminar inside the stadium and tried to hold it outside.
A scuffle broke out when the FDC members decided to drive to their headquarters in Najjanankumbi along Entebbe Road. Police used teargas and water cannons to stop the FDC party members. The FDC founding president, Dr. Kiiza Besigye was almost falling out of his vehicle when he was splashed with water.
Ssemujju says police acts of brutality are meant to break opposition politicians physically and eliminate them. He says NEC will come up with solutions on how to operate in such an environment.
Ssemujju adds that the team will also take a decision on what to do with police officers involved in brutalizing their members. These include Rashid Agero who was captured on camera spraying Besigye’s vehicle with teargas.
Ssemujju says they have also identified officers who arrested FDC women league members who had staged a protest at the party offices on November 6th 2019.
Amidst uncertainly of conducting any successful major activity, FDC is planning to commemorate 15 years of existence at Namboole parking space next month. Ssemujju says the ceremony is aimed at reinvigorating Uganda’s leading political party.
Over 10,000 FDC leaders and members from all over the country are expected to attend. FDC will then unveil a vigorous programme that will guide the final push against the current government. Ssemujju says FDC has written to police and copied to the Prime Minister and the Internal Affairs Minister.
