Police: Burora charged with hate speech, malicious misinformation

Former Resident City Commissioner-RCC of Rubaga, Herbert Burora

Kampala, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT | The Uganda Police Force has said that the arrested former Resident City Commissioner-RCC of Rubaga Division Anderson Herbert Burora is being charged with hate speech and malicious misinformation.

On Monday night, Burora through his X handle posted that there was unknown men who had besieged his home and claimed that they wanted to go with him, before he was picked-up.

Now Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, has confirmed the arrest of Burora and said that he is detained at Kira-Road Police Division . Onyango says he is facing two charges of hate speech and malicious misinformation against the state, contrary to the 2022  computer misuse act.

Onyango explains that the suspect did all the offences using his X account (formerly known as twitter handle), and his file has been sanctioned by the Directorate of Public Prosecution-DPP.

“These are serious crimes against the state, and we all appeal to the general public to avoid involving in such crimes of using social media, but rather use it carefully without misinforming the public,” Onyango has said.

Burora was in mid-March suspended from office for allegedly continued violation of the Uganda Public Service standing orders 20212. He had attacked Parliament Speaker, Anita Among over, being corrupt and shielding corruption in Parliament inclusive.

In the same reign, Burora turned his guns to the Inspectorate of Government Betty Kamya, accusing her for failing to execute her mandate, calling her to immediately resign for failure to fight corruption.

Recently Burora handed his resignation letter to his bosses, saying he wasn’t ready to take on any NRM job whatever, citing the increased rate of corruption among party members.
