Police bursts car theft racket in Nansana, one arrested

Wakiso, Uganda |  THE INDEPENDENT |  One person suspected to be the ringleader of a car theft racket in Nansana has been arrested. The suspect, identified as William Ssali alias George Byarugaba was arrested during an operation conducted by police officers along the Kampala Northern Bypass last evening.   

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Patrick Onyango says that the pursuit for the group started after a number of reports filed by persons whose motor vehicles were stolen over the last month.  

One of the said vehicles’ registration number UAN 433K Toyota Ipsum was stolen on June 17, 2020, by a group of people, who were driving a vehicle registration number UAV 235M. Robert Mukasa, the owner of the stolen vehicle reported the theft at Nansana Police Station. The other vehicle registration number UAE 965V belonging to Maimuna Nanono, a resident of Nansana.was stolen on July 9.  

Subsequent police investigations, aided with CCTV monitors cited the same vehicle around Nansana area from where it was pursued by police detectives. The suspects attempted to drive off but they were intercepted leading to the arrest of the driver, according to Onyango. However, he adds, the police is pursuing two other occupants who escaped during the process of the arrest.  

The police recovered the number plate registration UAV 235M which the suspects have been placing on stolen vehicles, 30 car keys and an assortment of other properties suspected to be stolen from various people. The items were found in a house in Kitunzi Zone V.
