Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The acting Chief Political Commissar, Hadijah Namutebi, has cautioned police officers and civilians against killing and injuring one another over unmet Christmas expectations.
Namutebi who was meeting community liaison officers and civilians in markets, taxi parks, and boda boda riders in Kampala said every Christmas, they register a high number of domestic related deaths and injuries because couples and other family members fight over unfulfilled Christmas expectations.
She has reminded the public that everyone has entered the festive season when prices of every essential commodity have almost doubled thus a few things will be managed by family heads while others are likely not to meet any of their usual Christmas requirements. Prices of foodstuffs like rice, maize flour, and cooking oil have been high for the better part of this year.
Namutebi urges the public to make their homes peaceful throughout the festive season. This, she said can be achieved by appreciating and being contented with the little that is available. Parents have also been cautioned against letting their children loiter during this festive season since they could be targeted by dangerous persons in communities.
The Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID statistics for last year show 17,533 cases of domestic violence were reported. Most of the cases of domestic violence rotated on failure to provide for the family, disputes over family property, drug and alcohol abuse, and infidelity.
A number people told Namutebi and KMP police commander, Stephen Tanui, that they were entering Christmas with empty pockets while others said they are worried over insecurity. Cissy Kyeyago said she will stay home since she does not have money to spend but also asked police to protect them.
Richard Ssenabulya, a boda boda rider said they are worried over thugs as they go into Christmas and New Year’s festivities. He also urged his fellow boda boda riders to be peaceful, vigilant and careful with the passengers they will get especially at night since some of them could be criminals.
Tanui has assured city dwellers that police and sister security agencies have already made enough deployments and will also be intensified during Christmas and New Year’s day celebrations. Station, division and district commanders have been urged to be on duty 24/7 in order to secure all worship, shopping and entertainment places.
