Gulu, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | A police constable attached to Field Force Unit in Gulu was this morning shot dead by unknown assailants.
Simon Onencan Okot, 34, was reportedly shot at 3 am from Pece Lukung in Pece-Laroo division, just about 50 meters from the police barracks. Okot, No.58120 had been deployed to guard Mother Ebenezer Nursery and Primary School in Laroo-Pece division. The motive for the shooting is still unclear according to police.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River region police spokesperson told Uganda Radio Network in an interview that the deceased who was armed with an Ak47, registration number 56-5827712-32506 with 30 rounds of ammunition was shot four bullets in the chest, lower abdomen, arm and leg.
He says a team of police detectives rushed to the scene of crime where they recovered four cartridges. None of the deceased’s belongings was taken by the unknown assailants according to Ongom.
Ongom also disclosed that no arrest was yet made following the shooting and that inquiries are still ongoing under Gulu CRB 495/2021.
By the time of filing this report, the body of the deceased was still at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital morgue awaiting a postmortem.
One of Okot’s relatives who preferred anonymity disclosed that the deceased joined the Uganda Police Force in 2010. She says the deceased left behind four children and two wives.
