Nakaseke, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police have used teargas to disperse legislators allied to the National Unity Platform-NUP political party, on their way to donate relief items to expectant mothers at Kikamulo health center in Nakaseke district.
A group of legislators comprising Nakaseke Central MP, Allan Mayanja Ssebunnya, Hassan Kirumira for Katikamu South and Luwero Woman MP, Brenda Nabukenya joined Barbie Itungo Kyagulanyi, the wife of NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine on Thursday morning to donate several items including mama kits, food and beds to Kikamulo health centre III.
Upon learning about the presence of the team, residents gathered to catch a glimpse of the legislators as they moved to the facility. However, police intercepted the group as they approached the health center and asked them to handover the items to Nakaseke district Covid-19 taskforce at Butalangu for final delivery.
The legislators rejected the proposal and reportedly started mobilizing their supporters who came in big numbers to counter the police blockade. Isah Ssemwogerere, the Savannah Regional Police spokesperson says that the growing crowds compelled police to use teargas to disperse them.
He faulted the legislators for contravening the guidelines on making such donations and pulling crowds, which could fuel the spread of COVID-19. Hassan Kirumira, the Katikamu South MP told URN that it’s absurd that the gov’t is opposed to what they consider as a hand in service delivery to the patients.

Close to a fortnight ago, Barbie Kyagulanyi led a similar drive-in Luwero district. Together with Brenda Nabukenya, Hassan Kirumira, and Denis Sekabira, all legislators from NUP, they met teen mothers and delivered over six delivery beds to Luwero hospital.
They also handed over one hundred packs of reusable sanitary pads, 60 litres of ultrasound gel, 60 litres of hand sanitizer, 60 litres of liquid soap and baby clothes.
