Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The police in Kiira region on Wednesday impounded a Fuso truck carrying electricity conductors.
The truck registration number UAZ 691T, was intercepted by a police patrol vehicle in Bugembe trading center. The conductors were allegedly from Kisenyi in Kampala and were being taken to Giant Steel Factory Uganda Limited in Jinja city.
Police arrested two suspects, Umar Ibanda and Moses Lukenge, who were occupants of the truck. They are currently detained at Jinja Central Police station.
Ibanda told the police that they were only hired to deliver the conductors to Giant factory premises.
James Mubi, the Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson says that investigations against the factory are underway.
Last week, scrap dealers in Jinja city and Jinja district were given ten days to voluntarily hand over vandalized electricity equipment or risk arrest. According to the police, most scrap dealers connive with vandals from whom they cheaply purchase vandalized electricity equipment and sell it to factories at higher prices.
This was after Kiira region police recovered vandalized electricity conductors from Giant Steel factory. Police also arrested Edward Katongole, a Kampala city-based scrap dealer, who is suspected to be directly involved in the sale of vandalized electricity equipment to the Giant factory.
