Koboko, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police detectives in Koboko are struggling to recover three guns that went missing from Lobule Government Prison last month.
Three warders Chief 3 Khan, the OC Lobule prison, Corporal Johnson Atiku, the in-charge stores and Corporal Zebedee Zakayo, the in-charge armoury were arrested and later charged with theft and negligence. They were sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in Gbukutu government Prison, Koboko district.
According to investigations by the police, one gun was signed by Atiku in January and had never been returned while the two other guns all AK-47 disappeared from the Armoury, which was managed by Zakayo. Two guns belonged to Prisons while the third to the Uganda Police.
He says that during the investigations, it was established that there was no sign of a break-in suggesting that the three warders are aware of the whereabouts of the guns and should be held responsible.
However, efforts by the police to trace the guns have yielded no positive results.
Samuel Abwang the DPC Koboko has asked the public to remain vigilant and provide information leading to the recovery of the guns. He notes that unscrupulous people could take advantage of the political season to cause insecurity in the district and the region.
Jolly Robert Bamutura the Regional Prisons Commander West Nile said police detectives are doing their best to ensure the guns are recovered.
