Omoro, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Polling materials were distributed at night in Omoro County, a bid to catch up with polling time for the District Local Government Councils elections scheduled for today Wednesday.
Omoro District Registrar Denise Obong told URN in an interview that they started the distribution of the polling materials at 2:30am to enable them save time in the morning and ensure that polling starts at 7:00am, the time specified by the Electoral Commission.
According to Obong, starting the distribution exercise that early also aimed to reach all the 15 Sub -Counties in the district in time since some of them Like Acet Town Council and Odek Sub-County are distant from the Electoral Commission’s office which is located in Koro Abili ni Koro Sub -County along Gulu -Kampala highway.
Fifteen pick –up trucks and two tipper lorries were used for distributing the polling materials to the different Sub -Counties. Omoro has 72,216 registered voters and 158 polling stations. Omoro District has five candidates contesting for the position of District Chairman. They include the incumbent Douglas Peter Okao of the National Resistance Movement Party -NRM, Francisco Wadok Awori of the Forum for Democratic Change -FDC, Damasco Odongo, Simon Tolit Akeca and Walter Lamony who are all independent candidates.
Damasco Odongo, one of the candidates for the Omoro District Chairman told URN that the distribution of polling materials at night is good only when the responsible authorities are disciplined. He said when the materials are to be distributed in the morning, they may reach the various polling stations as late as 11 a.m. hence delaying the election processes.
