Investiture of Prof. John Prancas Mukasa Sebuwufu as vice chancellor of the second largest public university is ongoing at Kyambogo University hall.
In attendance is the minister of education and sports Jessica Alupo, Prof. Mondo Kagonyera , Makerere University Chancellor , chairman and members of Kyambogo University council and staff.
The University Council appointed Prof. Fabian Nabugomu as the acting Vice Chancellor (VC) and later Prof. Elly Katuguka Rwakishaya, the deputy VC for academic affairs following the expiry of Prof. Isaiah Omolo Ndiege’s contract on Jan. 11.
Born in 1947, Ssebuwufu graduated in Chemistry from Makerere University in 1973. In 1990, he was appointed Principal Institute of Teacher Education (ITEK) now part of Kyambogo University and vice chancellor of Makerere University from 1993 to 2004.
Kyambogo University (KYU) was created in 2003 by merging the former Institute of Teacher Education, Kyambogo (ITEK), the Uganda Polytechnic, Kyambogo (UPK) and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
Kyambogo University has been in the public domain for the wrong reasons ranging from court battles between Ndiege and some university staff, student and staff strikes sparking investigations in the inspectorate of Government and parliament.
However, Ssebuwufu is yet to prove whether he will cure the institution of such ills that have seen two of its vice Chancellors leave after staff rejection.
The university is holding a two day graduation ceremony for over 8,000 students starting tomorrow amidst student demonstrations over missing names on this year’s list.
