Rakai man hacks wife to death, hangs himself afterwards

Rakai, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Residents of Katonto village in Ddwaniro sub-county are in shock after a double tragedy in which a man in his late-30’s hacked his wife to death with a panga before killing himself.

The gruesome incident occurred last night at around 10pm. The man so far identified as Katongole turned against his wife Rose Nakate following a domestic dispute.

According to residents, Nakate yelled for help but by the time they reached, it was too late to save her. Katongole disappeared from the scene of the crime and later hanged himself after his heinous crime.

Residents found his body hanging on a rope from a jackfruit tree.

The residents say that Katongole had on many occasions accused Nakate of infidelity which she denied.

Joseph Simbwa, their immediate neighbour says that Katongole had been a widower for three years when his wife passed away. He then decided to look for another woman to stay with and the opportunity landed when Nakate, a resident of Ddwaniro trading centre accepted him.

However, Katongole and Nakate’s relationship was unstable for the one year they have stayed together.

It is further said that the village council leaders intervened to settle their disputes but it seems they failed at some point.

Muhammad Nsubuga, the regional police spokesman confirmed the incident saying they are investigating the matter. He appealed to the public to always consider taking domestic disputes especially those that threaten life to police’s Child and Family Protection Unit for redress.
