Rehabilitation of major roads in Fort Portal city resumes

Ruhandiika Street whose rehabilitation is set to resume

Fort Portal, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Rehabilitation of two major roads in Fort Portal Tourism City has resumed.  The roads are Kaboyo and Ruhandiika which had been contracted to Trino Consulting Limited.

However, the construction works stalled last year after the company had just started grading the roads. This sparked endless demonstrations from business operators and residents who complained about the dust from the two roads.

They argued that it was affecting their businesses and the contractor was not doing anything to address the problem.  The road was supposed to have been completed in August last year.

The city council authorities were forced to terminate Trino’s contract and now it has been handed to China Wu Yi Company Limited at 779 Million Shillings. The same company is rehabilitating the Kasese-Fort Portal road and also worked on the Fort Portal-Kyenjojo highway that was commissioned last year.

The Chinese company is expected to complete the road works within three months.

According to Fort Portal City Engineer Herbert Kaihura, the rehabilitation of the road will resume immediately and thorough supervision will be conducted to ensure there is no shoddy work done.

The interim City Mayor, Rev Willy Kintu Muhanga, asked the contractor to ensure quality work, saying it was shocking to see the Kyenjojo-Fort Portal road developing cracks shortly after it had been commissioned by President Kaguta Museveni.

Engineer Edward Kalasi from China Wu Yi Company assured the authorities of standard work, saying that even in a scenario where the roads develop defects, they will be corrected at their own cost.

Alex Ruhunda, the Fort Portal City Member of Parliament, warned the technical staff against negligence of duty, saying the same had resulted in contracting a company that was incompetent to rehabilitate the roads.
