Reject Byarugaba’s plea, NSSF boss Ayota tells court

Patrick Ayota

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | National Social Security Fund (NSSF) managing director, Patrick Ayota has asked court to reject his predecessor, Richard Byarugaba’s plea to have his appointment quashed.

Ayota told court to put the stability of NSSF above politics in what he described as “unmeritorious cries of a single disgruntled person whose recommendation was rejected based on sound, cogent reasons.” Appearing before Justice Musa Sekaana, the NSSF boss through his lawyers said that the Shs18trn fund needed stability and that Byarugaba’s suit was disrupting that.

In a 38-paragraph affidavit drawn by Kampala Associated Advocates, Ayota said the Gender, Labour, and Social Development minister, Betty Amongi made the right call by appointing him. In August 2023, Byarugaba filed a petition against the Attorney General and Amongi, seeking court orders for Amongi to fulfill her statutory duties and complete his reappointment as the NSSF MD, as recommended by the board and required by the law.
