Residents left homeless as hailstorm hits Apac district

Apac, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | More than 500 families in Ibuje town council, Apac district are homeless and several crop gardens destroyed as hailstorms caused havoc.

Hailstorms accompanied by strong winds ravaged the area following a downpour and destroyed hectares of crop gardens and houses, leaving residents in dilemma.

Ibuje town council chairperson, Jowasso Engim says the most affected villages are Aketipida, Boke, Alenga, Adak A and Adak. He says that several gardens of cassava, beans, maize and sunflower plantations were destroyed. He is seeking the intervention of the government and wellwishers into the matter.

Vincent Okello and Rosemary Atino, both residents of Alenga in Ibuje town council said their six acres of beans and maize were destroyed during the hailstorm. He adds that they could fail to sustain their families in the next few months.

Stephen Wandira, the LCI chairperson of Acandano village says that more than 400 households in his area were affected. He says that the registration of the victims has commenced and reports will be forwarded to district leaders for more action by the end of Thursday.

Asante Odongo, the Apac LCV chairperson says that they have informed the Office of Prime Minister for immediate intervention.
