Jinja, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The House of Bishops sitting at the Provincial Secretariat in Namirembe has elected Rev. Canon Paul Hannington Suubi as the inaugural Bishop of East Busoga Diocese. The announcement was made by the acting Provincial Secretary, Rev. Balaam Muheebwa.
“The House of Bishops sitting at the Provincial Secretariat at Namirembe today, Wednesday 4 October 2023, has elected Rev Canon Paul Hannington Suubi as the first Bishop of East Busoga Diocese,” said Muheebwa in the official communication. Rev Muheebwa added that the bishop-elect will be consecrated and enthroned on November 19, 2023, at the St. Stephen’s Pro-Cathedral in Bugiri district.
A devoted family man, Bishop-Elect Suubi is married to Dr. Margaret Stella Suubi, and their union has been blessed with three biological children. As per details provided by the Church of Uganda, Suubi’s path in the ministry commenced with his ordination as a Deacon in August 1993, followed by his consecration as a Priest in 1997. His educational background includes the attainment of a Diploma in Education and the successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity.
Currently, Rev. Canon Suubi serves as the Assistant Vicar at St. Andrew’s Church of Uganda in Jinja. His ministry has been profoundly impactful, with a focus on educational institutions. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Chaplain at Busoga College Mwiri.
The Division of Busoga Diocese
The Diocese of East Busoga was established by separating it from Busoga Diocese due to years of management disputes. Concerns about a lack of accountability, limited accessibility, and poor service delivery within the mother diocese were raised by the faithful and clergy, leading to the division.
In addition to East Busoga, another diocese, Central Busoga, was also created, further dividing Busoga Diocese. It’s important to note that Busoga Diocese was originally founded in 1972, with Rt. Rev. Cyprian Bamwoze serving as its first bishop, when it separated from Namirembe Diocese.
