Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Police are yet to confirm whether the weapon used by city lawyer Sam Ahamya to shoot Nekeon Buruga, a private security guard was licensed. Buruga met his death on Saturday afternoon at Kings Park Rugby Club in Kakajjo Zone in Kiira municipality where he was on guard duties.

He was killed when city lawyer, Sam Ahamya, who had left his pistol at the reception, reportedly attempted to perform Normal Safety Precautions (NSP) with the magazine still intact, and discharged bullets.

Police apprehended Ahamya, and recovered the pistol and bullet cartridges. On Monday morning, Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson told URN that they are yet to establish the legality of the firearm.

Owoyesigyire explains that the suspect’s file has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for guidance. “The suspect is currently detained at Kira-Division Police, but the file has been sent to the office of the DPP for perusal and guidance as investigations into the matter continue,” Owoyesigyire stated.

When asked about the possibility of individuals acquiring guns without sufficient training on gun use and precautions, leading to such incidents, Owoyesigyire mentioned that every gun is licensed based on proof that the individual underwent training in licensed gun schools and qualified.

“What I can say is that every person who applies for a gun has to present papers proving that he went through a licensed training center for gun use and is qualified. But in this case, we haven’t established whether the gun is known by the Police,” Owoyesigyire noted.

The 2022 crime annual report indicated that Police recorded 279 cases of murder by shooting. Of these, 270 individuals were killed in similar incidents, raising concerns about gun ownership in the country.
