Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT |  Ronald Rugumayo continued the kind of form that earned him honours at the Magical Kenya Open in February, by clinching the Absa Captain’s Bell 54-hole professonals tournament that concluded Friday.

Rugumayo, who made history as the first Ugandan to make the cut in a DP World Tour, triumphed at the ongoing Absa Captain’s Bell tournament, carding an impressive 7 under par 205 stroke after rounds of  72, 67, and a stunning 66.

David Kamulindwa was 5 strokes back in the professionals event, coming in second with a 214 score.

There were also new winners in the other two categories, with Joseph Cwinya-ai taking the men’s amateur title with a total of 219 gross (75, 70 & 74), edging out Ibrahim Bagalana (220) by a shot.

Peace Kabasweka was dominant to take the women’s title with 224 gross, after rounds of 76, 74 & 74 with  Gloria Mbaguta second 17 strokes behind at 241.

More Uganda top golfers will be eyeing an opportunity to compete at international level by shining at the main event today as this week’s Captain’s Bell Tournament climaxes. Absa Uganda bankrolled the tourney with sh152 million.

On top of several awards, including sh20m prize money for the professionals, top performers this weekend will be potential candidates to get support to play abroad. Absa has in the past three years, supported several Ugandan golfers to participate in the prestigious Magical Kenya Open, which is part of the European Golf Tour.

At the event that concludes today, the new captain hosts the club members and introduces the new management team. The 2024/25 Committee is led by Captain Paul Charles Rukundo and his Vice Captain Jerry Owachi, who have been elected to lead the team.
