Rwampara, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | At least Shillings 300 million is needed to help hailstorm victims in Mwizi sub county, Rwampara district. The hailstorm caused extensive destruction in Kigaaga and Ryamiyonga parishes last month affecting hundreds of people.

The hailstorm claimed one person, injured two others, and destroyed several gardens and homes. The deceased was identified as Onesmus Nuwe, a resident of Kibaya cell in Kigaaga parish. A report compiled by the district shows that the hailstorm affected 1,613 households and 203 acres of banana plantations and other crops like maize, beans, irish and sweet potatoes.

Benon Musiime, the Rwampara Senior Agriculture Officer says that the most affected areas are; Kihangire, Ryamiyonga, Kabaya, Kyoma I, Kimuli, Kakoni I, Ryamiyonga, Kyeyare, Kakoni II, Kyoma II, and Rwenyaga villages. Musiime blames the disaster on poor farming methods and the destruction of trees despite the hilly terrain of the area.

According to Musime, they intend to use part of the money to launch a sustainable land management campaign to sensitize residents on proper land use to mitigate climate change.

Richard Owomugasho, the Rwampara district chairperson says their report details the damage caused not only to farming but other infrastructure mainly health centers, roads, and bridges. He says unfortunately the district has no money and is waiting for help from the disaster preparedness ministry.

Jane Asiimwe Muhindo, the Rwampara Resident District Commissioner, says they have already submitted the report to the office of the prime Minister for consideration. Clesensio Murambati, the Kakoni 1 LCI chairperson says that their lives are at stake if the government doesn’t come to their rescue.
