Kampala, Uganda | PATRICIA AKANKWATSA |  The Rwanda High Commission in Uganda, High Commissioner Joseph Rutabana has announced that 10,000 Rwandans living in Uganda have registered to vote in the upcoming Rwandan elections.

This significant diaspora participation emphasizes the inclusive nature of the electoral process and the commitment of Rwandans abroad to their homeland’s democratic future, he said in a press briefing.

High Commissioner Rutabana confirmed that there will be one polling station at the Rwanda High Commission in Kampala with 8 voting rooms to accommodate the 10,000 registered voters. This polling station will be equipped with the necessary resources to ensure a smooth and efficient voting process.

The Rwandan government has coordinated closely with Ugandan authorities to ensure the security and integrity of the voting process. Voters will be required to present valid identification, must be 18 years of age and proof of registration to cast their ballots.

According to Rutabana, 60,000 Rwandans living in the diaspora have registered to vote and back home there are 9.5 million registered voters out of the 13 million population with 2 million first-time voters.

Voting will start from July 14th to July 16th starting with Rwandans living in diaspora casting their votes on the 14th. The Rwandans at home will vote on July 15th for the president and 16th for the members of parliament and special groups.

Three candidates are running for the presidency, each representing a diverse range of political ideologies. They are; President Paul Kagame the flag bearer of the ruling Rwandese Patriotic Front-RPF Inkotanyi party, Dr.  Abineza Frank of the Democratic Green Party and Mpayimana Philip who is contesting on an independent ticket.

A total of 345 Candidates were approved by the Electoral Commission of Rwanda to contest for the parliamentary seat in the Lower Chamber of deputies. However, only 80 members are required to be elected to the lower chamber of deputies.

Comprehensive security plans have been developed by the Rwanda National Police and other security agencies to maintain peace and order during the election period. This ensures that all voters can participate safely and without fear.

High Commissioner Rutabana urged all eligible Rwandans, both in Uganda and elsewhere, to participate in the upcoming elections. He emphasized the importance of exercising their democratic rights and contributing to the nation’s future.

“Your vote is your voice. It is crucial that all Rwandans, regardless of where they reside, take part in this important democratic process,” High Commissioner Rutabana said.
