Rwenzori South Bishop asks security to deploy at places of worship

Kasese, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | The Bishop of South Rwenzori Diocese Bishop, Nason Baluku has asked security agencies led by the police and the army to tighten security at worship places ahead of Christmas on Monday. He says this will deter any wrong elements that could take advantage of the day’s celebrations to attack people.

The comments come at a time when suspected members of the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) attacked Kitehurizi village in Kamwenge killing 10 people. Kasese alone lost more than 50 people between May and December to suspected rebels including an attack on Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Secondary School which left more than 44 people mostly students killed.

The Bishop asked church leaders to ensure there is enough vigilance and security measures including screening of all churchgoers. “Am asking the RDC and his committee, the army police, and other agencies as entrusted to ensure there is security, I pray that they work hard during this season to see that we are safe during this season, I also ask that police and the army be present at our places of worship,” Bishop Baluku said

The Bishop also asked Christians to be vigilant and report any unknown persons within their communities adding the need for the community to work closely with security agencies. In his Christmas message, the Bishop asked Christians to reflect on the meaning of Christmas and desist from engaging in immoral acts.

”We must use the day to cry out to our Lord, do what God expects of us, those who plan to drink alcohol, think twice, get home, and enjoy the day with your families,” the Bishop noted.
