Rwenzururu royal guards also face treason charges

Rwenzururu royal guards have been arraigned before Jinja Magistrates court to answer treason charges alongside their king Charles Wesely Mumbere. The 151 male and female guards, and the king were in court today.

According to the state, between the months of March and November 2016, Mumbere together with 151 others contrived a plot to overthrow the government of Uganda by using firearms.

The accused are said to have expressed such a plot by utterances and acts such as attacks on various police attachments, killing police officers , robbing firearms and ammunition, recruiting and training individuals to join an armed insurrection against government plus attending meetings abroad and attempting to acquire firearms.

The 152 accused persons on Wednesday appeared before Chief Magistrate Francis Kaggwa for purposes of reading the charges to them and to be remanded to a gazatted place.

On Tuesday, the state brought new charges of terrorism, aggravated robbery and attempted murder against the Omusiga and remanded him to Luzira prison where he was picked this morning and taken back to Jinja court to be charged afresh.

The visibly hungry royal guards were served with a modest lunch of sodas and snacks by the Leader Of Opposition in parliament also Kasese woman MP Winnie Kiiza.
